About Our Tutoring Program

Motown Mercy's tutoring program provides free one-on-one academic support for students who need extra help, guidance, or encouragement in school. Our goal is to make tutoring more accessible for families while helping students build confidence, strengthen study habits, and better understand what they are learning in the classroom.

Our tutoring program is primarily supported by high school and college student volunteers. College tutors may support high school, middle school, and elementary students depending on the subject and schedule. High school tutors may support students in 1st through 8th grade, focusing on general academic help, homework support, reading, writing, math, science, organization, and study skills.

For students in 1st through 8th grade, tutoring is available for general academic support across school subjects. For high school students in 9th through 12th grade, tutoring may be available for certain subjects depending on the student's needs, tutor qualifications, and tutor availability.

Tutoring may cover areas such as math, reading, writing, science, English, homework help, studying for quizzes and tests, organization, and general academic confidence. The goal is not only to help students finish assignments, but to help them understand the material, feel more prepared, and grow as learners.

How Matching Works

After a parent or guardian creates a portal account, selects Student/Family during onboarding, and completes their information and waiver, the Motown Mercy team reviews the student's grade level, subject needs, availability, and tutoring goals. Our matching system helps identify tutors who may be a good fit based on shared availability, subject support, grade level, and online tutoring preferences.

A match is not automatically finalized. Once the system finds a possible tutor-student match, Motown Mercy reviews it first. This allows our team to make sure the tutor is appropriate for the student's needs before confirming the match. After a match is confirmed, the family will receive next steps through the Motown Mercy Tutoring Portal.

Tutoring Portal and Zoom Sessions

All tutoring will be facilitated through the Motown Mercy Tutoring Portal. Through the portal, parents/guardians, students, and tutors can stay organized, view tutoring session details, access meeting information, and receive important updates.

Tutoring sessions will take place virtually through Zoom or another approved online meeting platform. Because sessions are online, each student will need access to a device that can use Zoom and the tutoring portal. This may be a computer, laptop, tablet, or another internet-connected device.

Online Safety and Program Expectations

Motown Mercy takes online tutoring safety seriously. Tutors must be reviewed and approved before being matched with a student. Tutoring sessions and communication should remain focused on academic support, encouragement, and appropriate school-related topics.

Tutors are expected to communicate respectfully and professionally at all times. Students and families are also expected to use the tutoring program respectfully and appropriately. Motown Mercy does not allow inappropriate language, unsafe conversations, personal or unrelated content, or communication outside approved tutoring channels unless specifically permitted by Motown Mercy and the student's parent or guardian.

Families should understand that Motown Mercy tutoring is a volunteer-based program. While we work hard to match students with tutors who fit their needs, tutor availability may vary. Creating a portal account does not guarantee an immediate match, but our team will do its best to connect each student with support when possible.

Motown Mercy believes every student deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and receive help when they need it. Through this tutoring program, we hope to provide students with encouragement, academic support, and caring mentors who want to see them succeed.

Please note: Motown Mercy tutoring is available for students in 1st through 8th grade for general academic support. High school tutoring for grades 9 through 12 may be available for select subjects depending on tutor availability. Creating a portal account does not guarantee immediate placement. Students must have access to their own device for tutoring sessions. Our team will contact families as soon as possible after reviewing each request.
